Resin Type Selection of FRP Gratings
Common resin types for FRP gratings include unsaturated polyester resin, vinyl ester resin, epoxy resin, etc. The following are the characteristics and applicable scenarios of different resin types:
Unsaturated polyester resin
O-phthalic unsaturated polyester resin:
relatively low price, with ordinary corrosion resistance, resistant to atmospheric aging, seawater corrosion,
etc., long-term use temperature is – 50℃ to 60℃, suitable for general industrial environments that do not require particularly harsh
corrosion resistance, such as car washes, ordinary drainage ditch covers, greening tree protection boards, breeding industries, etc.
Isophthalic unsaturated polyester resin: corrosion resistance is better than orthophthalic type, resistant to medium concentration
of inorganic acid and alkali and various salts, long-term use temperature can reach – 50℃ to 90℃, commonly used in walkways,
platforms, etc. in municipal construction, and also suitable for relatively less corrosive areas in industries such as chemical and electroplating.
| Resin Selection Chart | |||
| RESIN TYPE | GRATING TYPE | DESCRIPTION | APPLICATION |
| Vinyl Ester | Type VE | Superior corrosion resistance | Environment with high corrosion problems. |
| Flame resistant Vinyl Ester | Type VE-FR | Superior corrosion & Flame resitance | Environment with high corrosion requiring better flame resistance. |
| Isophthalic Polyester | Type IP | Industrial grade corrosion resistance | Used in the environments of normal or less concentration inorganic acid, alkali, etc |
| Flame resistant Isophtalic polyester | Type IP-FR | Industrial grade corrosion & Flame resistance | Used in les concentrated inorganic acidic areas requiring better flame resistance. |
| Orthophthalic polyester | Type OP | Moderate grade corrosion resistance | For use in environment which requires water & weather proof solution. |
Vinyl ester resin:
It has excellent corrosion resistance, especially for strong acid, strong alkali, salt, solvent and acid-base alternation and
other harsh corrosion environments. The long-term use temperature is – 50℃ to 110℃. It also has good fatigue resistance
and impact resistance, high tensile strength, and is often used in chemical industry, marine engineering, sewage treatment
and other fields with extremely high corrosion resistance requirements, such as sulfuric acid plants, pharmaceutical plants, reaction pools around, offshore drilling platforms, etc.
Epoxy resin:
It has excellent corrosion resistance, especially under the erosion of strong acid, strong alkali and solvent-like corrosive substances,
it can provide better protection. It has high mechanical strength and rigidity, good bonding performance, small curing shrinkage, good
dimensional stability, electrical insulation performance, water resistance and heat resistance are also outstanding, and it can maintain good
performance at relatively high temperatures. It is suitable for environments requiring high strength, high corrosion resistance and high
insulation, such as insulation platforms of electrical equipment, highly corrosive areas of chemical equipment, aerospace and other high-end fields.
Phenolic resin:
It has outstanding ablation resistance and high temperature resistance, can maintain good stability in high temperature environment,
and has certain flame retardancy, high oxygen index, and can effectively delay the spread of flames when a fire occurs. It is suitable for
places with high fire protection requirements, such as fire isolation belts in petrochemicals and fire passages in buildings, but it is generally
brittle and has relatively poor toughness.
